New York Umbrella Insurance

When you adopted your dog the workers at the animal shelter assured you that he was docile and mild, but that this particular breed could be aggressive, especially when protecting their home and family.

He’s been your best companion for two years, never so much as growling at a stranger. You were confident that you had nothing to fear.

Then it happened.

The new neighbors moved in across the street, and every time you passed their house, your dog snarled and the hair on the back of his neck stood up. To keep everyone safe, you avoided the house and minimized contact. One day they came over unexpectedly and your worst nightmare happened.

Your sweet, overgrown puppy attacked and bit your neighbor. Blood was drawn, and an ambulance was called. Now you’re wondering if you’ll be sued.

Do You Have a New York Umbrella Insurance Policy?

In the case of a dog attack at home, or some other kind of accident, such as if you have a pool or a trampoline, your homeowner’s insurance (or auto, if the accident was vehicular) will kick in and pay claims up to your coverage limit. Sometimes, though, the coverage limit won’t cover the total cost of the claim – or your insurance won’t cover the claim at all.

Without an umbrella liability policy, you will be held financially responsible for paying the claim. With a New York umbrella insurance policy, the amount of claim not covered by your underlying insurance policies will be paid up to your coverage limit amount.

Our New York Umbrella Insurance Policies Cover:

  • Bodily injuries from accidents with your vehicles or on your property.
  • Damage to other’s property.
  • Certain lawsuits – like the one that may easily occur if your dog attacks someone.
  • Specific personal liability issues such as libel, slander, malicious prosecution, false arrest, and others.

In New York, an umbrella insurance policy can be purchased separately, or to save on the cost, you can bundle it with your home and/or auto insurance.

The recommended coverage limit for umbrella insurance is the total amount of your net worth.

Why Should You Consider an Umbrella Policy?

The need for an umbrella policy is rare, which is why it’s much less expensive than other insurance policies. But it only takes one car accident, one dog bite, or one small accident with injury to give someone a reason to sue you. Sometimes, even without a good reason, you can be on the receiving end of a lawsuit.

  • Dog bite claims can cost upward of $500,000, depending on the injury.
  • A car accident death is reported every 12 minutes.
  • Slip and falls are very common. The medical costs alone can be $50,000.

Accidents happen all the time. Whether you’re at fault or not, a New York umbrella insurance policy will help keep you covered and minimize the financial damage to you as claims are paid out.

Why Choose Rey Insurance?

We are a local, family-owned insurance agency and have been in business since 1978 when our father, Frank Rey, started the company so he could be close to his mom and give his kids (that’s us!) a place to go after school. These days, the company is 100 percent owned by women, Frank’s daughters, and we’re carrying on the family tradition of helping our clients not only find the best insurance for their needs but making sure they understand exactly what they’re getting.

We understand the importance of family and home, and we’re committed to our community. As an independent insurance agency, our priority is finding the best coverage for you, not convincing you to choose one specific company with limited insurance plans.

Our mantra is, “If we wouldn’t recommend it to our mom, we wouldn’t recommend it to you.”
